Foraging Disclaimer

Last updated: June 2025

Please read this carefully. Foraging can be dangerous. Misidentification of wild plants and mushrooms can cause serious illness or death. This disclaimer exists to protect you.

For Educational Purposes Only

All content on Spore & Scout — including articles, blog posts, guides, PDFs, identification tips, photographs, and any other materials — is provided for educational and informational purposes only. Nothing on this site constitutes professional foraging advice, and nothing here should be treated as a substitute for hands-on guidance from a qualified expert.

Never Eat Solely Based on This Site

Never consume any wild plant, mushroom, berry, or other edible based solely on information from this site. Even highly detailed guides and photographs can be misinterpreted. Lighting, season, age, and regional variation can all make the same species look very different in the field.

Before you eat anything you have foraged, you should:

Consult an Expert

Always consult a qualified expert or experienced forager before consuming anything found in the wild. Local foraging groups, mycological societies, and guided forays are invaluable resources. We encourage you to seek them out.

Misidentification Is Dangerous

Misidentification of wild edibles can cause serious illness or death. Some toxic mushrooms and plants closely resemble edible ones. Death Cap mushrooms (Amanita phalloides), for example, are responsible for the majority of fatal mushroom poisonings worldwide and can easily be mistaken for edible species by the untrained eye.

Limitation of Liability

Spore & Scout, its owners, writers, and contributors are not responsible for any harm, illness, injury, allergic reaction, or death resulting from the misidentification of wild edibles, the use of information found on this site, the use of our guides or content, or any foraging activity undertaken in connection with this site.

By using this site and purchasing our guides, you acknowledge that foraging carries inherent risk and that you assume full personal responsibility for any foraging decisions you make.

Our Guides Are Educational Tools

Our guides and identification resources are educational tools designed to support your learning — they are not substitutes for hands-on expert guidance. Use them to build your knowledge, but always verify in the field with an experienced person before making any consumption decision.
