Key Identification Features
- Clusters of overlapping dark blue-black to purple vase-shaped caps (3–8 cm each), wrinkled white to gray spore-bearing surface underneath (not true gills), firm dark flesh. Very distinctive deep indigo color. Grows with Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir at high elevations.
