Key Identification Features
- Large shelving bracket clusters (up to 60 cm across), bright orange-yellow upper surface, pale yellow-white pore surface underneath. Grows on conifers (Douglas-fir, hemlock, spruce) in PNW — distinct from L. sulphureus on hardwoods. Soft and moist when young, tough when old.
Preparation Notes
Harvest young tender portions only — older specimens tough and bitter. Some people react to conifer-grown specimens (GI upset) even cooked; eat small amount first time. Cook thoroughly.
