Key Identification Features
- Clitocybe nebularis: large pale grayish-brown funnel cap (8-20 cm), crowded white decurrent gills, strong mealy-soapy odor, often in fairy rings in leaf litter. Inocybe erubescens: medium cap (4-8 cm), pale ochre becoming brick-red when bruised, fibrous texture, musty spermatic odor. Both: mixed broadleaf woodland, grassy forest clearings. Toxin: Muscarine. Lookalike (nebularis): edible Clitocybe geotropa which lacks the strong mealy odor and does not cause toxicity.
Symptoms & Toxicity
Muscarinic toxidrome. Onset 30 minutes to 2 hours. Salivation, lacrimation, urination, defecation, bradycardia, miosis, bronchospasm, excessive secretions. Self-limiting 4-6 hours in mild cases.
