Key Identification Features
- Amanita muscaria: iconic bright red to orange-red cap (8-20 cm) with distinctive white warts (removable). White ring, white gills, bulbous base with wart rings (not a true cup volva). Amanita pantherina: similar form but brown to grey-brown cap with white warts
- more potent ibotenic acid/muscimol content. Both in birch, pine, and spruce woodland
- parks and gardens across UK, Scandinavia, and Baltic States. Toxin: Ibotenic acid / Muscimol (pantherine-muscaria syndrome). CRITICAL: despite the name muscaria, muscarine content is minimal. Lookalike: Edible Amanita caesarea which has orange cap, yellow gills, and no white warts.
Symptoms & Toxicity
Ibotenic acid / Muscimol CNS syndrome. Onset 30 minutes to 2 hours. CNS: confusion, disorientation, hallucinations, euphoria, ataxia, sedation/coma. Autonomic: mydriasis, dry skin, dry mouth, tachycardia. Severe: seizures, respiratory depression.
