Key Identification Features
- Bright orange-red cap (5–18 cm), white pores, white stem densely covered in orange-to-brown scabers. Flesh turns pink then gray-black when cut. Strictly mycorrhizal with aspen and cottonwood. Very similar to L. insigne but with more vivid orange cap.
Preparation Notes
Cook very thoroughly — raw or undercooked Leccinum species cause severe GI upset. Good flavor when properly cooked. Classic RM edible.
