Key Identification Features
- Gray-brown to tan slimy cap (4–12 cm)
- yellow to olive pores (not gills)
- partial veil leaves a ring zone on stem
- pale yellow stem
- strong pungent chemical-like odor when fresh. Found exclusively under Monterey pine and other 2-needle pines along CA coast. Peel the slimy cuticle before cooking.
Preparation Notes
Remove slimy cap skin before cooking — causes GI upset in some people if left on. Sauté in butter or add to soups. Flavor improves with cooking. Best mixed with more flavorful mushrooms.
