Key Identification Features
- Large rounded to top-shaped body 10-20 cm
- white to tan then lilac exterior
- white interior edible when all white inside
- outer skin cracks in a net-like pattern with age
- produces purple-violet spore mass at maturity (key ID feature)
- persistent cup-like base remains after spores disperse
Preparation Notes
Edible only when interior is pure white throughout. Excellent sliced and sauteed. One of the most common large puffballs of southeastern grasslands.
