Key Identification Features
- Cap 5-15 cm, white to grayish. INSTANTLY stains chrome-yellow when cut at stem base or cap edge — definitive field test. Strong unpleasant phenolic/inky smell especially when cooked. Gills pink maturing to brown. Brown spore print. Superficially resembles edible button mushrooms.
Symptoms & Toxicity
Onset within 2 hr: GI distress — nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping. Smell when cooking is often first warning. Symptoms usually mild to moderate; self-limiting.
